Nursing2007 Foundation Scholarship recipients -- THANK YOU NURSING2007 FOUNDATION!!!
2007 marked the first year that UNM-Gallup nursing students have received scholarships from Nursing2007 Foundation, a very worthy organization. The foundation, among other things, solicits and distributes scholarships for nursing students. Their mission statement is as follows:
"Recognizing the need for cultural and gender diversity in nursing, the foundation will develop some scholarships specifically targeted to cultural minorities and male students. Currently, the foundation has under consideration:
- National Student Nurse Association (NSNA) scholarships--these scholarships will be developed in conjunction with the NSNA Foundation for students already enrolled in a nursing program.
- Scholarships targeted at Native American students enrolled in the nursing program at the University of New Mexico, Gallup.
- In addition, the Nursing2007 Foundation will develop other scholarships in collaboration with nursing organizations."

Hello! I am a Navajo from Crownpoint, NM. THANK YOU for the generous contribution you gave me. I am currently working part-time as a nursing assistant for a clinic, but I go to school fulltime. I am in my third of four semesters in the associate degree in nursing program. I have four children, with my oldest graduating this year. Your contribution has been beneficial for me. I travel 130 miles round trip each day for classes and/or clinical rotations, and this will help me so much with gas and meals. We travel every day even with bad weather – most of our roads are not paved and they get very muddy...but we’ve learned to adapt. This hasn’t stopped me from going to school in Gallup. I am determined to go on for my bachelor’s degree in nursing. I hope to work in our hospital one day and bring my knowledge to our Navajo people and also continue to learn more from others. Your generosity has made it more of a reality because I don’t have to worry about money so much. Your scholarship has allowed me to cut back on my work hours some so I can devote more time to studies. Thanks again so much; my family and I are very grateful to you all. – Susie

I would like to thank the Nursing2007 Foundation for awarding me this scholarship – it was unexpected and took me by surprise! I am a third-semester nursing student, and the past semesters have been tough on me financially. So, your scholarship will help me get my head back above water – especially when it comes to my utility bills. Up until this semester, I was the main financial provider for my family of three. I had to swallow my pride and ask for help in places I never thought I’d find myself. Even the thought of not having money to pay for my child’s lunch after all these years made me feel guilty. Since I began to experience the hardships of being in nursing school, I have tried to help my fellow nursing students in what I can. I will lend a book, be a source of information, or just be there to listen to what they have to say so they’ll be heard. I believe I am setting an example for my cousin-brothers and -sisters. I was raised by my grandparents, and they stressed the importance of a higher education. I am thankful to them for instilling in me the courage to challenge myself with an education as difficult as nursing. Though I will graduate in December of 2007 with an associate’s degree in nursing, I wish to continue until I receive my master’s degree. I am undecided as to which area of nursing to specialize in but will decide soon. Again, thank you for the generous scholarship. It was truly an answer to my prayers. Sincerely – Lisa
