2008 Colonial Dames Scholarship Recipients.

Christy

Hello.  My name is Christy Natewa.  I am 25 years of age, and I reside in beautiful Zuni, New Mexico.  My clans are the Turkey and Child of the Dogwood clans.  I am currently in my 3rd semester of the nursing program at the University of New Mexico-Gallup campus.  I’ll graduate in December of this year.   After completing the ADN program, my intention is to earn a BSN and become a labor and delivery nurse.  I am very thankful for receiving the Colonial Dames scholarship.  I am especially grateful because I have felt that it was my obligation to exclude work while in school so my whole attention is only on my studies.  The money that I will receive will help to pay for expenses including gas since I commute with my uncle in order to attend classes and study sessions.  It will also aid in clinical expenses.  This semester my clinical rotation is in Grants, NM, sixty miles from school, one way.  I’ll need to stay over night a couple of nights per week, so this money is actually providing housing for me during clinical rotations and gas to get to them!  I wasn’t sure how I was going to swing it otherwise.  So, again, thank you, thank you, thank you.  – Christy.

Nicole Benally, 2nd-semester, UNM-G nursing student.  My name is Nicole Benally, and I am a student in the Gallup nursing program.  I am Navajo and from the Ramah, NM, Navajo Community.  I am from the Mexican People Clan, and born to the Tangle People Clan.  I have always wanted to be a nurse, and I am very proud that I have made it into the nursing program and through my 1st semester.  After I finish the Nursing Program, I want to work in my community where I can help the people of my tribe.  My commute to school is about 1 ½ hours each way and gas prices are very high; therefore, your assistance will help defray the costs of the commute.  I also have a few more books and supplies to buy for my classes, and your generous scholarship will help me do that.  Thank you so much, COLONIAL DAMES!
