Community Affairs Department

Back to main section

The Community Affairs department is composed of six full-time and one part-time persons whose duties include development (fund-raising), grants, Institutional Research, Workforce Development education, providing Community Education (for fun) courses to the general public, and running the UNM-Gallup DWI school.

Resource Development and Grants

The Director of Community Affairs is primarily responsible for creation of new development programs for the benefit of the college and our students. This is a change in emphasis from the past when local economic development was the primary focus of this position. Last year was a good year for grant awards to the UNM-Gallup campus. Major grants applied for and received last year include Title III ($1.62 million over five years), Lumina Foundation for Education ($400,000 over four years), USDA III grant for telecommunications ($478,000), and the FRESP grant ($248,000). These grants will allow the college to improve services to students, create new developmental courses, provide faculty development and faculty research opportunities, and expand the fledgling Distance Education offerings.

Institutional Research

Our statistician supplies everyone on campus with whatever student related data they need. Quick response to the needs of faculty and staff is the norm. Typical functions are supplying data for people writing grants, responding to external agency requests, submitting performance measure data to our legislators, and getting decision-making information to our administrators. The statistician has been heavily involved in the planning phase of the Lumina Achieving the Dream initiative, a data-driven project.

Community Education:

We offer a course in Administrative Office Specialist that is geared to TANF recipients who are trying to get off welfare. This very successful class offers more one-on-one contact and specialized work skills development than one would receive in a typical Business Technology curriculum. Our clients are recruited in conjunction with the Navajo Nation department of Workforce Development. We are hoping to expand our course offerings of this type in the near future. A series of computer camps were held in May for Navajo at-risk high school students.

Community Education also offers a slate of "fun" classes for the general public. Our most successful class last year was Lifestyle Balance, which focuses on diet and exercise with an eye to diabetes prevention. Our draft schedule is shown below. For a current schedule of Community Education classes, call 863-7738.
