The Institute
If you're interested in your health, the health of your family, tribe and community, and interested in writing about health issues concerning Native Americans, consider applying to the Native American HealthWriters Institute.
You and other Native Americans are invited to apply to the first national Native American HealthWriters Institute. The 10-day Institute, May 15-24, offers Native Americans the opportunity to learn or improve their health writing skills as well as to, pulling on designing and on producing health materials.
Chronic illnesses affect a large percentage of Native American populations. Because of this, educational materials written by Native Americans for their local communities are desperately needed.
If you're selected to attend the Institute, you'll produce health materials that pertain directly to you and your community. Also, you'll learn to research health issues and improve your editorial skills.
Fifteen Native Americans will be selected to attend and receive intensive one-on-one instruction. Whether you're a journalism student, a professional journalist, a health care provider, health writer or work in health promotion, you'll benefit from the intensive training at the Institute. No prior training is required. |

The Institute will be held at The University of New Mexico Gallup campus, in the heart of the beautiful Southwest. The University is home to approximately 4,000 students. Located near the Navajo, Zuni and Hopi reservations, UNM Gallup has the largest Native American student body in the world at a public university.
UNM Gallup was established in 1968 and recognizes and embraces the cultural diversity of its student body and of the region. Its mission is to develop lifelong learners in a context that is responsive to the region’s cultures.
Located in Gallup, New Mexico, the adobe-style facilities sit amongst some of the most beautiful red rock country in the Southwest. Gallup’s population is close to 20,000, but because of its easy access from the reservation, the trade population on any Saturday can number close to 100,000, and more on holidays.
The region’s diverse cultures include many ethnic groups and various cultural events are celebrated throughout the year. |
