Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT)

Career Opportunities

A career in the medical laboratory is one of the most challenging in today’s technical world.  MLT graduates have found employment in Indian Health Service hospitals, research laboratories, physician offices, clinics, public health centers, veterinary clinics and industrial laboratories.

About Medical Laboratory Technology

Medical Technology is a branch of diagnostic medicine in which professionals with an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree assist the physician in providing aid for the diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury, implementation of health care services, promotion of health and the well-being of patients.  Diagnostic medicine involves the use of the most accurate performance of these tests to determine the absence, presence, extent and causes of diseases.

Faculty

The members of the MLT faculty have met the accreditation standards for teaching clinical laboratory science with a Bachelor’s Degree or above, national certification, and bench experience for several years in the clinical departments for courses they teach.

Facilities

The MLT Program utilizes classroom and laboratory space at the UNM-Gallup Campus.  Equipment and supplies are available for students to develop necessary analytical skills prior to clinical rotations.  The following local and regional hospitals serve as clinical training sites:

  • Fort Defiance Indian Hospital
  • Gallup Indian Medical Center
  • Rehoboth McKinley Christian Healthcare Services
  • Zuni Comprehensive Care Center

The Program

The Associate of Science Degree (A.S.) in Medical Laboratory Technology is structured to address the standards dictated by the National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), an independently recognized accreditation agency.

There are three levels for prospective students to consider:

  • Pre-MLT. A program designed for the student who requires review before beginning the MLT Program.
  • MLT.  The integrated program that is based on general academic and clinical courses, which leads to an AS Degree with eligibility to take the Board of Registry exam for national certification.  The MLT Program may be incorporated into a Medical Technology (MT) program leading to a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree.
  • MLT-MT. Classes are selected which are similar to the freshman and sophomore courses at a four-year university to facilitate acceptance into a BS program in Medical Technology.
