Program Description

The Cosmetology and Barber programs at UNM Gallup offers students an opportunity to earn certification and an AAS degree and prepare the student for a career in cosmetology, barbering, and/or manicurist.  The objective of the program is for graduates to be prepared to take and pass the New Mexico State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologist Exam, which will make the student eligible for entry level employment in a beauty salon or barber salon.  Classes are conducted Monday through Thursday 8:00-5:00.

The occupational outlook for cosmetology careers is very promising.  According to Money Magazine, it is one of the 50 most fast-growing and desirable jobs.  What are the career options?


What about salary and benifits?

Cosmetologist can expect to make between $8.00/hour and higher with commission and retail commission
depending on motivation, experience and how many hours per week you want to work.  Many companies offer  health and dental benefits and opportunities to purchase stock in their companies. What does it take to be successful?
An artistic touch and a high degree of manual dexterity. The ability be a team player and get along with others.
