Zuni Campus

For eighteen years, the University of New Mexico-Gallup has been serving the Zuni community. Laura Leekala, who joined UNMG-Zuni in 1987, says the Zuni campus was housed at Twin Buttes High School from 1985 until the new facility was completed in February 2002. Ruth Haskie, Business Tech instructor, recalled that business classes were offered as early as 1984, but thought these courses were offerered through an individual, not the University.
The 25,000 square foot beauty-meets-functions facility features classrooms, two large computer labs, and two other labs set aside for vocational training and fine arts. Course offerings for the fall 2003 semester include ceramics, business and construction technology as well as a number of core courses. The Zuni Campus is fortunate to have a variety of instructors from both the village of Zuni and UNM-Gallup Campus offering these core and elective courses.
The campus has an Adult Basic Education (ABE) Center on site. The center prepares students to obtain their G.E.D.'s and to prepare them for more advanced courses. ABE also administers the COMPASS advanced placement test. This test positions students at the appropriate level when they start college. The UNMG Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will also be at the Zuni Campus to provide business counseling, education, and training to current and future small business owners.
According to Zsombors Peters, writing in the Gallup Independent last spring, the Zuni Campus is the "largest off-campus site operating under direction of UNM-Gallup" and can accomodate over 500 students. Erin Collins, new program manager at the Zuni facility said she was a little intimidated by that 500 student number. She said, "Our combined strategy for the Zuni campus is to increase enrollment and the number of courses offered. Enrollment has continued to increase since the Zuni campus opened last year but an enrollment of 500 is quite a goal! We'll work on it!"
