The purpose of the Automotive Technology program at The University of New Mexico-Gallup, is to ensure those students enrolled have the opportunity to achieve their desired degree and receive Entry-Mid-Upper level training as an automotive technician. The program includes classroom lectures and laboratory experiences on past and current vehicles and products. Our program covers approved Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified curricula from Engine Repair and Performance to Automatic Transmission, Drivelines, Electrical and Body Systems, Air Conditioning and Heating, Brakes, Steering and Suspension Systems, Testing and Diagnosis and much more.

What You Will Learn

• Enrolled students will learn fundamental automotive services and approved ASE curricula from basic engine services, to computerized fuel delivery systems, anti-lock braking systems, steering and suspension systems, computerized engine and transmission controls and much more.
• The training provided will have an emphasis on basic skills and principles which allow participants to adapt to new and changing technologies.
• Entering students will study through class lectures and hands on training and further study in the ASE automotive specialty areas of A1-A8.
• Use critical thinking and establish a framework to provide safe and effective services for the students, college campus and community.
• Display professionalism, communication skills, including a commitment to lifelong learning.

Opportunities for employment for holders of a one year Certificate may include; parts counter person, mechanics helper, entry-level technician, component exchanger, or diesel technician helper.

Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Automotive Technology is designed for the student who wishes to acquire the knowledge and develop the skills necessary to meet entry-level employment standards as an automotive technician, service writer, or component rebuilder. A graduate with a degree in applied science should be eligible for employment in the following areas: mid to upper entry-level line mechanic, component rebuilder, automotive specialty service worker, auto parts supply vendor/worker, parts manufacture/quality control, upper entry-level automotive dismantler, or recycler.

Student Information

• Students are required to wear automotive uniforms on campus and work sites, as well supply their own personal safety equipment.
• Students will understand the importance of professionalism, safety, abide by all rules and regulations set forth by the University of New Mexico student handbook, abide by all shop classroom rules, as well as complying with the daily changes within the automotive industry and will meet the challenges of continued growth within the automotive technology profession.
• Students are required to purchase classroom and shop manual textbooks, personal safety equipment and encouraged to provide own personal tools.
• Many of the needed specialty tools are available for students to check out from the shop's tool inventory and must be returned. If students would like to a complete list of basic tools, please contact the automotive office or speak to an instructor.
