Dr. Catherine Propper (Biological Sciences) and Anita Antoninka (Forestry) have been providing training programs for URM students independently and together for more than two decades. They have supported the career development of more than 100 undergraduate and graduate URM STEM students. Together, they co-developed an NIH funded RISE (R25) program that currently supports undergraduate and graduate students with hands on training on research on topics in environmental health and are part of an initiative to develop a strong support system for URM graduate students.

Conference Topic:

STEM Community: Strengths the STEM Community relied upon for overcoming the challenges of the pandemic

Description:

We propose a panel discussion with faculty and staff involved in NAU programs aimed at removing barriers for students from historically excluded groups wishing to pursue graduate STEM education. We will share funding opportunities as well as our experience with best practices in supporting students and training faculty to support students. We also seek to recruit new MS students into an NIH-funded RISE program focused on Environmental Health. Over the course of the pandemic, we have done much work to support our most vulnerable students. We will discuss what has worked as well as additional challenges and barriers that need to be addressed.
