New College Council brings together campus leadership to improve communication and collaboration

By Richard Reyes, Wednesday, April 3, 2024.

GALLUP, N.M. — The University of New Mexico-Gallup is prioritizing shared governance, improved internal communications and transparency through regular meetings of a new College Council.

The College Council is a collegial and consultative body made up of executive leadership, department supervisors, and staff/faculty representatives designed to serve the good of the campus. The council meets once a month and is chaired by UNM-Gallup Chancellor Sabrina Ezzell.

“College Council meetings are a great opportunity for staff, faculty, and administration to collaborate as they share plans, activities, ideas, and feedback,” Ezzell said.

According to the council’s charge, the council promotes collaboration and facilitates professional, timely, factual and clear communication between constituent groups on campus. It also provides recommendations to executive leadership on college matters that are aligned with the branch’s mission, vision and strategic plan.

“Many groups across UNM-Gallup are able to share what their departments and organizations are actively working on, issues they are facing and provide solutions, as well as ask for suggestions that may better UNM-G as a whole,” UNM-Gallup Staff Council President Tina Griego said.

The membership of the College Council includes the:

  • Chancellor.
  • Dean of Instruction.
  • Director of Student Affairs.
  • Director of Business Operations.
  • Manager of Facilities and Maintenance.
  • Faculty Assembly President.
  • Staff Council President.
  • Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
  • Information Technology Manager.
  • Police Sergeant.
  • Senior Public Relations Specialist.

In line with the campus’ transparency efforts, the College Council now has a page on the UNM-Gallup website where meeting agendas and minutes can be seen.

The council tackles a wide-range of issues that impact the campus as a whole. For example, during the most recent meeting on Wednesday, March 20, the council discussed capital improvement projects, strategic planning, graduation ceremony updates, budget planning, computer labs, and more.

Each party present is then encouraged to pass along the information to their departments and fellow employees to help everyone on campus stay informed of what’s happening at UNM-Gallup.

“The College Council is the perfect way for departments and organizations to disseminate need-to-know information to their groups,” Griego said. “It makes everyone on campus feel like they are part of the team and they can add value by voicing their ideas and solutions.”
