January 20, 2021 - The Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC) announced today that it will conduct a COVID-19 vaccination event on Saturday, January 23, 2021, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. for individuals, ages 65 and over, who are residents of the Gallup Service Unit, or receive healthcare primarily at GIMC. The event will be held at the UNM-Gallup Gymnasium located at 705 Gurley Avenue in Gallup, New Mexico. A total of 600 doses will be available at the event on a first come, first served basis.
“We are so honored to continue our service to the local community and provide our Physical Education Complex to GIMC for this important vaccination event,” said Dr. James Malm, chancellor of UNM-Gallup. “It will take us all doing our part to see our way out of this pandemic, and it is so heartening to see these events begin in our community.”
All COVID-19 Vaccinations are voluntary. To review frequently asked questions about the COVID-19 vaccination, visit: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/faq.html. It is recommended not to have the COVID-19 vaccine within two weeks of other vaccines. Due to the severe health risks associated with COVID-19 and the fact that reinfection with COVID-19 is possible, individuals who have previously tested positive for COVID-19 are able to receive the vaccine after 14 days of being free of COVID symptoms. Additionally, current evidence suggests that reinfection with the virus that causes COVID-19 is uncommon in the 90 days after initial infection. Therefore, people with a recent infection may delay vaccination until the end of that 90-day period if desired.
Chartered as a community college more than five decades ago, UNM-Gallup operates under the aegis of the University of New Mexico as Gallup’s branch campus. Although our priority has always been to serve the community as a two-year college, our association with UNM has allowed us to be flexible and stretch as the need arrives. As the largest of the four UNM branch campuses, we serve approximately 2,200 students.
