Construction Technology

The Construction Technology Program at UNM-Gallup offers students interested in building, the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills necessary to hold a variety of entry level jobs in the construction industry. The Construction Technology Program is certified through the National Center for Construction Education and Research, providing accreditation, instructor certification, standardized curriculum, registry, and assessment.

The program trains our students in the most advanced methods of construction. Our recent curriculum revision has a focus on Green Building and Energy Efficiency.


About

Construction Technology at UNM-Gallup has been serving our local communities for well over thirty years. We have a local partnership with and participated in the construction of five Habitat for Humanity homes, worked on community remodel projects, assisted in the installation of solar photovoltaic systems on local homes, and offer to the community, cabinetmaking and furniture construction classes in the finest woodworking shop in McKinley County.

A graduate with a degree or certificate in Construction Technology may be eligible to seek employment in the following areas: Building Maintenance Worker, General Carpentry, Plumbing Repairman, Electrical Maintenance Worker, HVAC Service Person, Concrete Trades Helper Building Materials Manufacturer, Building Materials Estimator, and Building Supervisors Assistant

What You Will Learn

  • Enrolled students will learn fundamental skills needed to gain meaningful employment in construction fields. Students will gain a broad knowledge base of construction from blueprint reading, framing, plumbing, HVAC and electrical, to more advanced knowledge of green building, weatherization, solar energy, and alternative construction methods.
  • Entering students will study through class lectures and hands on training through actual construction projects.
  • Use critical thinking and establish a framework to provide safe and effective services for the students, college campus and community.
  • Display professionalism, communication skills, including a commitment to lifelong learning.

Programs

Certificate in Construction Technology

Opportunities for employment for holders of a one-year certificate may include: Finish Carpenter’s Helper, Apprentice Trainee, Cabinet Builder’s Helper, and Form Carpenter’s Helper. Please consult with your advisor for current transferability information.

Student qualifies for National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core Industry Certification.

Associate of Applied Science in Construction Technology

The Associate of Applied Science in Construction Technology degree is designed to provide the opportunity for an individual student to develop competent skills for employability in the construction industry. Students gain two levels of industry certification through their pathway to an AAS degree in construction technologies. Each level marks a progression in career readiness with students ready for employment at the first level.

The programs starts with safety culture and its importance in the construction crafts including the role of OSHA in job-site safety. It continues through basic construction techniques utilizing industry standard curriculum adopted from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). Students’ progress in the AAS degree program as they escalate in levels of industry standard certification, each level eligible for certification completion and state of employability.
